Two independent companies have agreed to use the same brand and name - the National Roads and Motorists' Association or NRMA Motoring and Services, a member-owned mutual organisation and the NRMA Insurance, a brand and a unit of Insurance Australia Group.

Whereas NRMA Motoring and Services was established in 1920, NRMA Insurance was founded in 1925 and was reestablished in 1926 as a private mutual company. Originally, NRMA Insurance only have motoring insurance policies but when it became a sub-agency of Lloyds of London, it was able to offer other insurance policies.
