Originally, GIO Australia was founded as the Government Insurance Office in 1927 set up by the Government Insurance Act of New South Wales. It was specifically created to provide workers' compensation insurance and to take charge of activities previously facilitated by the NSW Treasury Insurance Branch.

In 1989, the Government Insurance Office was named GIO Australia. In 1999, AMP obtained majority shareholding in GIO Australia Holdings Limited and the latter became a subsidiary of AMP Limited. In 2001, Suncorp Metway Ltd acquired AMP's general insurance businesses including GIO.

GIO's businesses include GIO car insurance, GIO home insurance, GIO contents insurance, GIO business insurance and many more.

GIO Car Insurance Products

GIO Car Insurance offers three car insurance products: the comprehensive car insurance, the third party property insurance and the CTP Green Slip. Together with these policies are varied optional car insurance covers that you can choose from.

GIO Car Insurance: Comprehensive Car Insurance

GIO Car Insurance's comprehensive car insurance policy covers accidental loss or damage to your vehicle. The policy also covers you against damages from fire, theft or attempted theft or storm. The policy extends to the coverage of the legal costs and damages to someone else's car or property caused by your vehicle in an accident.

Together with GIO Car Insurance's comprehensive car insurance policy are some perks such as free hire car up to 14 days after an accident or if your car is stolen, rating protection and option for premium payment terms subject to certain conditions.

GIO Car Insurance: Third Party Property Damage Insurance

GIO Car Insurance's third party property damage insurance policy covers legal costs and damages to other people's property caused by your car. The same GIO Car Insurance policy provide you with cover for substitute vehicle, wherein GIO Car Insurance covers you for third party property damage if you sue other vehicle if you can't drive your insured vehicle.

GIO Car Insurance: Compulsory Third Party Personal Injury (CTP Green Slip)

This GIO Car Insurance policy covers you and the driver of your car against personal injury claims if you injure someone in a car mishap.
