A Brief History of Club AAMI Car Insurance

It was on 7 January 1934 when the first policy was granted, but not by the AAMI Car Insurance known today. The policy was underwritten by Club Motor Insurance Agency (Club Motor). Club Motor Insurance Agency is a specialised company that provided insurance for members of RACV, RACQ and RACT. In 1969, the RACV decided to become an independent insurer which was followed by RACQ. RACT remained with Club Motor. After the split, the shareholders of Club Motor decided to change its name to Australian Associated Motor Insurers Limited or AAMI Car Insurance.

Although AAMI Car Insurance is incorporated in Victoria in September 1969, it was only on 1 January 1970 commenced it business as a motor vehicle insurer. It provided an alternative to motor club-owned and government-owned insurance companies. Since then, AAMI Car Insurance branched out to the different states and territories across Australia. In 1985, RACT broke away from AAMI.
